At first, like many others, I was
very skeptical when Nintendo revealed the Wii's controller. I really
didn't like the sound of it, but after awhile I became neutral on the
matter and decided that before I make my decision on whether or not to buy a Wii, I
should try it first.
A few days before Thanksgiving, I decided
it would be a good idea to go to the mall, thinking that over the
weekend it will be more crowded than New Jersey. I head into EB games,
determined to try out the Wii. I was disappointed to see that they
only had Excite Truck, as I was not anticipating it very much, but I
decided to try it out anyway. The controller wasn't there but the
console was running, so I asked the man working there if I could try
out the Wii. To play, it required either an ID or a driver's license
so if you stole the controller they could find you and castrate you.

I
traded my license for the controller and started to play Excite Truck.
You hold the controller like an NES controller and steer like it is a
steering wheel. If I recall correctly, A was accelerate, but it may
have been the 1 button. At first I was terrible at the game, but after
a few minutes I got used to the sensitivity of the controller. As I'm
not one for racing games (aside from Mario Kart), I don't think I will
be purchasing Excite Truck, but if you are a fan of racing games, I
suggest giving this a try. It's definitly an innovative and fun change
of pace for the racing fan. While I was playing, I overheard people
talking about playing Zelda at a Wii station in front of Macy's, so I
traded the controller back for my license and walked down to Macy's.
I
arrived at Macy's to see a ring of 6 Wii stations; two with Wii Play,
three with Wii Sports, and one with Zelda. Thankfully, there wasn't
much of a line for Zelda so I didn't have to wait for long. It gave me
an option of either fishing or playing the main game. Not wanting to
waste my time with fishing, I selected the main game. To take out your
sword, you have to make the motion one would make when taking a sword
out if its' sheath. To swing your sword, you really just have to flick
your wrist, but its way more fun to swing the Wiimote like you would a
real sword and hack the shit out everything in sight. Some lizard
monster started shooting arrows at me so I took out my bow (the control
pad is used like the c-buttons on the N64) and shot them like bladdow.
It was it bit hard for me to aim as the sensor was placed lower than I
would have liked, but in your own home that can be easily changed. I
then came upon a locked door. My emo shadow thing, which I assume is
the Navi of TP, told me I had to hit four switches with my boomerang.
TP introduces the ability to z-target multiple things at once, which is
how I hit all the switches. I found a magnet and equipped my iron
boots. The magnet proceeded to pick me up and drop me in a random
location filled with lots of lizard monsters, and then my turn ended,
and I reluctantly gave up my controller to the white trash family
waiting line behind me who were probably too unintelligent to figure
out how to play.
I also played a Duck Hunt type game in Wii Play
against my brother. As you can guess, it’s exactly like Duck Hunt
except a bit easier to aim as it has a crosshair.
Final Verdict:
Excite Truck brings a nice twist on racing games which racing fans may
enjoy. I have to say, from what I played of Zelda, hacking the
hell
out of lizard monsters is a lot more fun than just pressing A until
they die. In my honest opinion, the Wii truly has the potential
to be a gaming revolution. The Wii is illmatic. If I wasn't
such a stingy J, I would
have already bought one.
